This is one of a series of Brahms variations all originally written for piano or pianos and only one of which, the St. Anthony Chorale, he himself scored for orchestra. The woodwind octet is a sound beloved by many composers and familiar in their orchestral music but not often used in chamber music where the groups more often include horns. This arrangement will appeal to those who have a second instrument that is too often tucked away under the bed. It takes full advantage of the piccolo, cor, bass clarinet and contrabassoon
