Probably the most exacting work of all eight. In the originals of no. 7 and 8 the two clarinets were replaced by two violins and as a result Haydn seems somewhat less constrained. While this arrangement shares the resulting work equally amongst the three pairs of soprano instruments, the parts are definitely more demanding but equally more rewarding. The slow movement is particularly effective; probably the highlight of all eight notturni. Although alternative clarinet parts are provided for this movement, the preferred orchestration is to use basset horns in their place. The change to their sound seems to match the somewhat mysterious nature of the movement rather well. Full advantage has been taken of the presence of modern french horns giving them a prominent role, especially in movement three.
